The Friends of Thwaite Gardens work in partnership with the University of Hull to manage the gardens. We currently have about 250 members, of whom, about 10% volunteer their time, knowledge and experience to maintain and develop the plant collections.
Founded in the year 2000, the Friends have just celebrated their 25th anniversary.
The Friends of Thwaite Gardens is a member of the Friends of Botanic Gardens Forum. This is an association to bring Friends groups around the UK into closer contact with each other to share experience.
Our aims are to:
- Co-operate with the University of Hull in the preservation of Thwaite Gardens
- Promote local engagement with the Gardens, their history and future development through membership, open days and other events
- Work with the University to support education and research in the gardens
- Provide opportunities for volunteering in the gardens
- Maintain and develop collections of rare and unusual plants
- Promote biodiversity in the gardens by supporting the University of Hull Biodiversity Action Plan
- Develop networks and collaborations with appropriate organisations for the promotion of botanic gardens e.g., Botanic Gardens Conservation International, Plant Network, Friends of Botanic Gardens Forum.
